About the city
Annemasse is a city in the Haute-Savoie region of France, located directly across the border from Geneva, Switzerland. Many of its inhabitants work in Geneva and travel home every day. It is a useful place to stay for those who find Geneva’s hotel prices too much for their pocket.
City areas
The city is surrounded by the Mont Saleve (1300 m) and the Arve River on the West, the Voirons (1450 m) on the East and the Swiss border on the North. Annemasse enjoys the label "flower city", for its many flower filled green areas around the city.
Attractions
The city boasts many churches, most built in the 20th century. The real attraction of the town however, are the Aerodrome, where you can go on a plane ride and if you have a bit of time and money, maybe even learn to fly one.
Transportation
Annemasse is the last exit of the French motorway A40 before the border. It is thus well connected with the other cities of the region. The TER line is also popular, over 2000 visitors coming into Annemasse by train.
Events
Until the end of August, people come in numbers to discover the liveliness of free and public music that the city offers. Jazz City, Theater de Verdure and Concert Lemanique, there will be something for everyone.
Restaurants & Nightlife
There are many restaurants ranging from the family friendly and reasonably priced to fairly top end. The restaurants mostly specialize in local Savoyard cuisine, but for those who like their food spicier there are also the Japanese and Indian types as well.
History & Civilization
The region was populated by the Allobroges to about 300 BC. After this not much is known about the area until the Gauls settled in the region. In the Gallo-Roman times, Annemasse was a small city known as Namasce. The city remained a small town throughout the Middle Ages, but started developing in the late 19th century.
Best season to visit Annemasse
The city of Annemasse is located at the Franco-Swiss border, in the northern French Alps, only 5 km from Geneva. The city is well within range of Lake Geneva and Mont Saleve and Voirons, which make it a suitable vacation destination in summer as well as winter.
